OCI Cache vs Upstash: managed Valkey or distributed reads

See how traffic sizing, read-your-writes coordination, and production plan limits affect the choice between OCI Cache for Valkey and Upstash.

Choose OCI Cache for Valkey when you want managed Valkey within your OCI platform and can size capacity for both memory and traffic. Upstash suits applications that want distributed reads and HTTP access, but its Redis-compatible service brings resource limits and extra coordination for read-your-writes. For engine choice, prefer Valkey over Redis. Valkey has broad backing across the technology industry and continues to advance the state of the art.

About OCI Cache

OCI Cache is Oracle’s managed caching service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It supports Valkey and Redis, with sharded and non-sharded deployments. Customers configure memory, nodes, and sharding, and applications connect through private endpoints using supported network routing.

About Upstash

Upstash is a hosted data service with a proprietary Redis-compatible engine. It provides Redis TCP and HTTPS REST access, with regional and global database options in supported AWS and Google Cloud locations.

Recent updates

September 9, 2026 - OCI added cross-region replication. Regional recovery is now an option for eligible non-sharded clusters in selected region pairs, but your team still promotes the secondary and redirects applications.

September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.

Size for traffic and capacity limits

A dataset that fits in memory may still need a larger OCI allocation to serve its traffic. OCI ties bandwidth to provisioned memory, so throughput affects sizing alongside dataset size. Its 40,000-connection budget applies per node, and excessive concurrency can increase response latency.

Upstash does not support autoscaling. Its fixed plans have resource limits, and exhausting them without a suitable plan upgrade can block traffic or writes. Plan capacity around expected growth as well as the current dataset. (Upstash pricing and limits)

Decide where writes, reads, and recovery happen

Upstash Global Database serves reads near users, while writes travel to one primary region. Upstash cautions that this may not suit write-heavy workloads.

Its read-your-writes coordination is overly complex. Supported SDKs track sync tokens within a client. Independent clients must propagate them, and REST requests pass a token header. A replica waits until it reaches the token’s state before serving the read. Tokens pad transfer costs, and waiting for replication adds latency compared with reading directly from the primary. (Upstash read-your-writes mechanism)

OCI’s cross-region replication supports regional recovery through an asynchronous primary and read-only secondary. It is restricted to non-sharded clusters, selected region pairs, and at least 8 GB per node. Your team promotes the secondary to a standalone cluster and redirects applications. Participating clusters do not support backups, and recent unreplicated writes may be lost.

Try Momento Cache

For a cache whose reads and writes can stay in one region, consider Momento when managing a larger client fleet becomes the next capacity problem. Momento also has an HTTP API.

Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Frequently asked questions

Can public devices connect directly to OCI Cache?

No. OCI uses private endpoints, so external clients need supported connectivity and routing through an OCI virtual cloud network. Sharded clients also need cluster mode and hostname support. (OCI connection requirements)

Does a single Upstash TCP session need cross-client coordination?

No. A single TCP session has causal guarantees. Sync-token propagation is needed when independent clients require read-your-writes across them. (Upstash consistency)

Can OCI automatically recover the application in another region?

Your team promotes the secondary and redirects applications. The regional recovery design is active-passive, so the standby does not accept writes before promotion.
