OCI Cache vs Aiven for Valkey: size for connections and choose your recovery path
Compare memory pricing, client capacity, and failure recovery to choose managed Valkey for a growing application fleet on OCI or Aiven.

OCI Cache for Valkey fits applications already on Oracle’s cloud, with bandwidth tied to memory and a per-node connection budget. Aiven for Valkey offers more cloud choices, but its clustering access and plan-specific recovery deserve early attention. Choose around your fleet’s traffic and failure tolerance, alongside the size of its dataset.

About OCI Cache
OCI Cache is Oracle’s managed caching service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It supports Valkey and Redis, with sharded and non-sharded deployments. Customers configure memory, nodes, and sharding, and applications connect through private endpoints using supported network routing.
About Aiven for Valkey
Aiven for Valkey is Aiven’s managed Valkey service, available on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. Its plans provide different capacity and replication configurations, with non-clustered and clustered service options. Aiven manages routine infrastructure and database operations.
Recent updates
September 9, 2026 - OCI added cross-region replication. Regional recovery is now an option for eligible non-sharded clusters in selected region pairs, but your team still promotes the secondary and redirects applications.
September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.
Size for traffic as well as data
OCI’s bandwidth allocation changes with provisioned memory, so throughput needs can affect sizing even when the dataset fits. Each node supports up to 40,000 concurrent connections, and excessive concurrency can increase response latency. Its private endpoints require suitable network routing. (OCI overview, client best practices)
Aiven also ties connection capacity to memory. Its 4 GB example estimates 16,384 concurrent connections, with actual limits varying by plan and provider. A large client fleet can therefore influence the memory you buy from either service.
Account for client changes when adding shards
OCI lets you change memory per node, node counts, and sharding. Sharded deployments require clients with cluster-mode and hostname support. (OCI deployment options)
Aiven clustering remains in Limited Availability. To move an existing non-clustered service to sharding, you need a new service and cluster-aware clients.
Match recovery to the state you store
Aiven’s non-clustered Startup tier runs one node. If it fails, Aiven restores a replacement from backup, causing downtime and losing writes made since that backup. Business has one standby and Premium has two, with automatic failover. (Aiven high availability)
OCI offers asynchronous active-passive cross-region replication for non-sharded clusters in selected region pairs, with at least 8 GB per node. Regional recovery requires converting the read-only secondary to standalone and redirecting applications. Participating clusters do not support backups, and recent unreplicated writes may be lost.
Try Momento Cache
If client growth is outpacing data growth, consider Momento for its gateway and stable client integration.
Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.
Talk to a Momento solution engineer to evaluate the capacity model and configuration that fit your workload.
Frequently asked questions
What support response can I expect?
Initial response starts from 15 minutes for both OCI and Aiven.
Does an Aiven cluster backup guarantee a consistent point in time across shards?
No. Backups run independently for each primary, so a restored cluster need not represent one coordinated instant. Restore also requires the same primary count. (Aiven cluster recovery)
Does OCI schedule its managed backups for me?
No. OCI provides full RDB snapshots, but scheduled backup creation requires an external scheduler calling the API.
