Memorystore for Valkey vs Upstash: capacity planning or global read coordination

See how capacity decisions, production costs, and global read coordination affect the choice between Memorystore for Valkey and Upstash.

Choose Memorystore for managed Valkey in Google Cloud when your team can own capacity planning. Upstash offers usage-based pricing and distributed reads, but global writes still go to one primary region. For a new deployment, prefer Valkey over Redis. Valkey is widely backed across the tech industry and continues to advance the state of the art. Upstash provides a Redis-compatible service rather than Valkey.

About Google Cloud Memorystore

Google Cloud Memorystore for Valkey is a managed caching service built on Valkey. It offers cluster-enabled and cluster-disabled deployments in Google Cloud, with customers choosing node types, capacity, and topology. Memorystore for Redis and Redis Cluster are separate related offerings.

About Upstash

Upstash is a hosted data service with a proprietary Redis-compatible engine. It provides Redis TCP and HTTPS REST access, with regional and global database options in supported AWS and Google Cloud locations.

Recent updates

September 24, 2026 - Memorystore’s current Valkey 9 release became generally available. Teams evaluating Valkey 9 can now select that release. The current version table lists that release as the default. Upgrades cannot be downgraded.

September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.

Plan for growth and resource limits

Memorystore offers six regular node types for clustered deployments. You can deploy the Memorystore Cluster Autoscaler to adjust shard counts from CPU and memory demand. Your team configures and operates that automation.

Upstash’s fixed plans have throughput, storage, and bandwidth limits. Check how the plan handles the traffic increase you expect.

Limits can affect service as well as cost. PAYG budgets can rate-limit requests. Fixed-plan automatic upgrades can raise the bill, while exhausted limits without suitable upgrades can block traffic or writes.

Account for read-your-writes coordination

Upstash can serve reads near users, but global databases send writes to one primary region. Upstash cautions that this architecture may not suit write-heavy workloads. Applications that frequently write and immediately read updated state also need read-your-writes coordination.

A single TCP session has causal guarantees, but read-your-writes coordination across clients is overly complex. Supported SDKs track sync tokens within a client. Independent clients must propagate them, and REST clients pass a sync-token header. A replica must reach the token’s state before serving the read. Tokens pad transfer costs, and waiting for replication adds latency compared with reading directly from the primary. (Upstash’s read-your-writes guide)

Memorystore’s asynchronous replication can lose acknowledged writes during unexpected failover.

Try Momento Cache

For a regional cache with growing client traffic, Momento Cache offers a gateway designed for millions of clients. Momento also has an HTTP API.

Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Frequently asked questions

How do the uptime SLAs compare?

Upstash and Memorystore each offer a 99.99% uptime SLA.

Can Memorystore change cluster mode after creation?

No, the mode cannot change in place. Clustered instances use cluster-aware clients and support sharding. Nonclustered instances use one shard and ordinary clients. You can still resize capacity within the selected mode.

How quickly can support respond?

Google Cloud support offers initial response from 5 minutes. Upstash support offers initial response from 30 minutes.
