Memorystore for Valkey vs Redis Cloud: capacity control and client routing
See how node choices, client routing, and plan limits affect the work and cost of growing a production cache on Memorystore or Redis Cloud.

Choose Memorystore for Valkey when Google Cloud integration and direct capacity control fit your team. Redis Cloud offers managed Redis with a proxy endpoint and plan-specific limits. Memorystore offers customer-deployed autoscaling, while Redis Cloud keeps resizing customer-initiated. Prefer Valkey over Redis for its broad backing across the technology industry and continued advancement of the state of the art.

About Google Cloud Memorystore
Google Cloud Memorystore for Valkey is a managed caching service built on Valkey. It offers cluster-enabled and cluster-disabled deployments in Google Cloud, with customers choosing node types, capacity, and topology. Memorystore for Redis and Redis Cluster are separate related offerings.
About Redis Cloud
Redis Cloud is Redis’s managed database service, offered through Essentials and Pro plans. It runs the Redis engine and provides hosted databases with managed client routing. Cloud availability, capacity, and connectivity options depend on the plan.
Recent updates
September 24, 2026 - Memorystore’s current Valkey 9 release became generally available. Teams evaluating Valkey 9 can now select that release. The current version table lists that release as the default. Upgrades cannot be downgraded.
September 22, 2026 - Redis Cloud introduced Smooth Scaling. It improves Pro’s resizing process, while your team still initiates the capacity change.
September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.
Choose capacity control and client routing
Memorystore’s clustered deployments offer six regular node types with predefined CPU and memory combinations. Your team selects the node and shard layout. You can deploy the Memorystore Cluster Autoscaler to adjust shard counts from CPU and memory demand. Your team configures and operates that automation.
Clustered instances use cluster-aware clients and support sharding. Nonclustered instances use one shard and ordinary clients. You can resize within either mode, but you cannot change the mode in place. Choose it around the application’s expected growth. (Memorystore cluster modes)
Redis Cloud’s proxy endpoint simplifies client-side shard routing. Your team still initiates capacity changes.
Check Redis Cloud’s plan limits
Redis Cloud Essentials tops out at 10,000 connections, with smaller plans allowing fewer. Plans also cap throughput and bandwidth. Those limits make the application’s traffic and connection forecast more useful than the entry price alone.
Pro starts at $200 per month. It has no fixed database-level connection limit, but practical capacity depends on infrastructure, database configuration, and workload. (Redis Cloud subscriptions)
Try Momento Cache
If you want built-in autoscaling and managed client routing together, evaluate Momento Cache. Its dedicated Valkey capacity gives your team another operating model to consider.
Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.
Talk to a Momento solution engineer to evaluate the capacity model and configuration that fit your workload.
Frequently asked questions
Which choice provides public access?
Redis Cloud Essentials and Pro offer public endpoints. Private networking requires Pro. Memorystore has no public endpoint, although applications outside Google Cloud can connect through supported networking.
Can Memorystore switch cluster mode in place?
No. Cluster mode is fixed at creation. Choose cluster-enabled mode if the application needs sharding.
How do the uptime commitments differ?
Memorystore offers an uptime SLA of 99.99%. Redis Cloud offers 99.999%.
