Decide how much scaling work your team should own
ElastiCache Serverless handles routine capacity changes automatically. Node-based deployments also offer autoscaling options. For a planned surge that exceeds Serverless scaling pace, AWS recommends pre-scaling at least 60 minutes ahead.
With Redis Cloud Pro, your team monitors demand and initiates capacity changes, including any automation you build. A busy launch calendar therefore needs an owner for capacity decisions as well as a process for applying them.
Size Redis Cloud for your clients, not just your data
Redis Cloud Essentials tops out at 10,000 concurrent connections, with lower limits on smaller plans. Throughput and bandwidth limits also vary by plan. A small dataset can still need a larger plan when a large application fleet connects to it.
Pro has no fixed database-level connection limit, but infrastructure and workload constrain capacity.
Private networking can push you to Pro regardless of dataset size. Redis Cloud private connectivity requires Pro, which is offered in documented AWS and GCP regions. Essentials has a smaller regional selection, including limited Azure coverage. ElastiCache has no public IP, but applications outside AWS can connect through supported private networking, including VPN access.

No. ElastiCache Serverless requires cluster-capable clients and TLS. Check client mode before choosing the deployment.
How do the uptime commitments compare?
ElastiCache’s 99.99% SLA covers Serverless and node-based Valkey with automatic failover and primary and replica placement across at least two availability zones per shard.

Who handles regional failover with Redis Active-Active?
Your application handles inter-region client routing, including failover and failback. Redis manages local failover. Active-Active replication is eventually consistent, so the application also needs to accommodate updates arriving across regions at different times.
