ElastiCache vs Dragonfly Cloud: choose the engine behind the service

Compare RAM pricing, licensing control, and scaling requirements to choose a managed cache your team can build on for years.

Choose ElastiCache for Valkey if you want an AWS-managed service built on Valkey. Dragonfly Cloud runs a separate, company-controlled engine whose future releases can carry different license terms. That long-term dependency matters more than a small difference in RAM price.

About Amazon ElastiCache

Amazon ElastiCache is an AWS-managed caching service with Serverless and node-based deployment options. ElastiCache for Valkey runs the Valkey engine, while Redis OSS is a related offering. AWS manages infrastructure maintenance. Customers choose the deployment model and, for node-based clusters, the capacity and topology.

About Dragonfly Cloud

Dragonfly Cloud is a managed service built on the Dragonfly engine. Dragonfly is a separate implementation with a Redis-compatible API. The service offers standalone datastores and sharded Swarm deployments, with client requirements that depend on the selected mode.

Recent updates

September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.

Choose the engine and its governance

ElastiCache for Valkey provides a managed service built on an engine with broad industry backing. We recommend Valkey over Redis because it is widely supported across the technology industry and continues to advance the state of the art.

Dragonfly’s single-company licensing control exposes adopters to changes in the terms of future releases. (Dragonfly license, maintainer explanation)

Redis’s March 2024 licensing change illustrates why that control matters. Momento explores the history in RIP Redis: How Garantia Data pulled off the biggest heist in open source history.

Plan for cluster mode and autoscaling

Dragonfly Swarm provides managed horizontal scaling and requires cluster-aware clients. You can resize memory and compute, but cluster mode cannot change on an existing datastore. The Business plan includes autoscaling.

ElastiCache Serverless scales automatically. When anticipated demand exceeds its scaling pace, AWS recommends pre-scaling at least 60 minutes ahead. Serverless requires cluster-capable clients and TLS. Node-based deployments offer both cluster modes.

Try Momento Cache

If a sharding transition is approaching, evaluate Momento Cache for managed Valkey with a stable standalone client interface.

Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Frequently asked questions

Which Dragonfly bandwidth figure should I use for sizing?

Use sustained bandwidth for sustained demand. Dragonfly’s AWS Standard 12.5 GB example lists 0.5 Gbps baseline and 10 Gbps temporary, non-guaranteed burst. Bandwidth varies by cloud, memory, and compute tier. (Dragonfly bandwidth guide)

How quickly can support respond?

AWS support offers initial response from 5 minutes. Dragonfly support offers initial response from 1 hour.

How do the uptime SLAs compare?

ElastiCache offers 99.99%, while Dragonfly offers 99.95%.
