Redis Cloud vs OCI Cache: choose your engine and plan for traffic growth

See how connection limits, memory-linked bandwidth, and regional recovery affect the capacity and operating work your team takes on.

Choose OCI Cache for managed Valkey in Oracle Cloud. Redis Cloud serves teams running managed Redis, with Pro available on AWS and Google Cloud. Prefer Valkey over Redis for its broad backing across the technology industry and continued advancement of the state of the art. For an OCI workload, the next decision is how much capacity your traffic needs.

About Redis Cloud

Redis Cloud is Redis’s managed database service, offered through Essentials and Pro plans. It runs the Redis engine and provides hosted databases with managed client routing. Cloud availability, capacity, and connectivity options depend on the plan.

About OCI Cache

OCI Cache is Oracle’s managed caching service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It supports Valkey and Redis, with sharded and non-sharded deployments. Customers configure memory, nodes, and sharding, and applications connect through private endpoints using supported network routing.

Recent updates

September 22, 2026 - Redis Cloud introduced Smooth Scaling. It improves Pro’s resizing process, while your team still initiates the capacity change.

September 9, 2026 - OCI added cross-region replication. A standby region is now an option for eligible non-sharded clusters, with customer promotion and rerouting. The recovery restrictions below still matter.

September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.

Size for traffic as well as stored data

OCI’s memory-linked bandwidth means a dataset that fits in RAM may still need more capacity to handle its traffic. Its 40,000-client limit per node also makes connection distribution part of sizing. Excessive concurrency can increase response latency.

Redis Cloud Essentials plans top out at 10,000 connections, with lower ceilings on smaller plans. Pro has no fixed database-level connection limit, but infrastructure, configuration, and workload constrain practical capacity. A growing client fleet can make the plan choice matter before the dataset outgrows memory.

Your team still decides when to resize. Redis Cloud Pro keeps capacity changes customer-initiated. OCI lets you adjust memory per node, node counts, and sharding.

Plan how applications recover across regions

Redis Cloud Active-Active replication lets multiple regions accept writes with eventual consistency. Local failover is managed, while your application handles inter-region client routing. Active-Active memory requirements can reach four times the original dataset, so regional resilience affects capacity planning too.

OCI’s cross-region replication keeps one writable primary and one read-only secondary through asynchronous replication. It supports non-sharded clusters in selected region pairs, with at least 8 GB per node. To recover, your team converts the secondary to standalone and redirects applications. Participating clusters cannot use backups, and recent unreplicated writes may be lost.

If applications need to write in multiple regions, Redis Active-Active addresses that requirement. OCI’s model fits a standby recovery plan, with promotion and rerouting assigned to your team.

Try Momento Cache

For a regional cache whose application fleet is expanding, evaluate Momento Cache on AWS or its Google Cloud and Azure previews. Its gateway is designed for millions of clients.

Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Frequently asked questions

Can Redis Cloud and OCI use the same client mode?

Redis Cloud’s proxy handles shard routing behind a standalone-style endpoint. Sharded OCI clusters require cluster-mode clients. That difference matters when migrating an application that does not already handle cluster routing.

Which deployments qualify for Redis Cloud’s highest SLA?

The 99.999% commitment applies to qualifying Active-Active deployments. Downtime requires all databases in the deployment to fail. Unreplicated instances are excluded.

How quickly can support respond?

OCI and Redis Cloud each offer initial support response from 15 minutes.

What changes if I need private networking?

Redis Cloud private access requires Pro. Essentials offers public endpoints. OCI Cache uses private endpoints, so applications need suitable VCN routing or supported external connectivity.
