Memorystore for Valkey vs OCI Cache: bandwidth, clients, and capacity
Compare the capacity decisions behind managed Valkey on Google Cloud and OCI, from node choices and bandwidth to client connections and recovery.

Choose Memorystore for Valkey for Google Cloud integration, or OCI Cache for Valkey for an Oracle Cloud deployment. Both require capacity planning. Memorystore offers six regular clustered node types and a customer-deployed autoscaler. OCI ties bandwidth to provisioned memory, so traffic can shape your capacity bill even when the dataset fits.

About Google Cloud Memorystore
Google Cloud Memorystore for Valkey is a managed caching service built on Valkey. It offers cluster-enabled and cluster-disabled deployments in Google Cloud, with customers choosing node types, capacity, and topology. Memorystore for Redis and Redis Cluster are separate related offerings.
About OCI Cache
OCI Cache is Oracle’s managed caching service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It supports Valkey and Redis, with sharded and non-sharded deployments. Customers configure memory, nodes, and sharding, and applications connect through private endpoints using supported network routing.
Recent updates
September 24, 2026 - Memorystore’s current Valkey 9 release became generally available. Teams evaluating Valkey 9 can now select that release. The current version table lists that release as the default. Upgrades cannot be downgraded.
September 9, 2026 - OCI added cross-region replication. A standby region is now an option for eligible non-sharded clusters, with customer promotion and rerouting. The recovery restrictions below still matter.
September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.
Size for traffic as well as data
Memorystore’s six regular clustered node types offer predefined CPU and memory combinations. Your team selects the shape and shard count. You can deploy the Memorystore Cluster Autoscaler to adjust shard counts from CPU and memory demand. Your team configures and operates that automation.
OCI lets you change memory per node, node count, and sharding. Oracle allocates bandwidth with provisioned memory, so a throughput-heavy workload may need more memory than its dataset alone requires.
Large service fleets also need to account for OCI’s 40,000-connection limit per node. Excessive concurrency can increase response latency. How clients distribute connections across nodes matters alongside the total connection count.
Plan the recovery your application needs
Memorystore offers a 99.99% uptime SLA.
For valuable mutable state, Memorystore’s asynchronous replication means an unexpected failover can lose acknowledged writes. (Google’s HA guidance)
OCI publishes a 99.95% monthly availability commitment. Its regional recovery is a separate operating decision. Asynchronous active-passive replication supports non-sharded clusters in selected region pairs, with at least 8 GB per node. Your team promotes the secondary and redirects applications. Recent unreplicated writes may be lost, and participating clusters cannot use backups. (Oracle’s cross-region replication guidance)
Try Momento Cache
For a regional workload that can use AWS or Momento’s Google Cloud and Azure previews, evaluate Momento Cache to hand off topology adjustment and serve a growing client fleet.
Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Frequently asked questions
Can Memorystore switch cluster mode after creation?
No. Cluster mode is fixed at creation. Choose cluster-enabled mode for sharding or cluster-disabled mode for a single shard.
Can applications outside the chosen cloud connect?
Yes, with supported private networking. Memorystore uses Private Service Connect and has no public endpoint. OCI Cache requires suitable VCN routing.
How quickly can support respond?
Google Cloud support offers response from 5 minutes. OCI support offers response from 15 minutes.
