ElastiCache vs Aiven for Valkey: plan sharding and node recovery

Compare replicated RAM pricing, clustering access, failover, and support to choose a managed Valkey service your application can grow with.

Choose ElastiCache for Valkey when you want AWS deployment options with automatic scaling. Aiven for Valkey offers a choice of clouds, but growing into a sharded service requires a new deployment and access to its Limited Availability clustering feature. For either service, choose the recovery path your application needs alongside the capacity you buy.

About Amazon ElastiCache

Amazon ElastiCache is an AWS-managed caching service with Serverless and node-based deployment options. ElastiCache for Valkey runs the Valkey engine, while Redis OSS is a related offering. AWS manages infrastructure maintenance. Customers choose the deployment model and, for node-based clusters, the capacity and topology.

About Aiven for Valkey

Aiven for Valkey is Aiven’s managed Valkey service, available on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. Its plans provide different capacity and replication configurations, with non-clustered and clustered service options. Aiven manages routine infrastructure and database operations.

Recent updates

September 2, 2026 - Momento introduced Cluster and Flex capacity for Momento Cache. Both provide dedicated, managed Valkey resources. Cluster exposes topology choices, while Flex selects topology within capacity bounds, giving teams a choice in how they configure capacity while Momento operates the cluster.

July 17, 2026 - Aiven made its Valkey 9 release the default for new services, leaving existing Valkey 8 services unaffected. Node-based ElastiCache also offers Valkey 9. For a new service, that major-version parity makes clustering access, client requirements, and the selected recovery plan more useful distinctions.

Leave room for the next stage of growth

Aiven’s clustering feature requires a new service and cluster-aware clients. If you expect to outgrow a non-clustered deployment, budget for that transition when choosing your initial plan. Clustering remains in Limited Availability.

ElastiCache offers Serverless and node-based deployments, both with autoscaling options. Serverless requires cluster-capable clients and TLS, while node-based deployments support both cluster modes.

Large planned events can still need preparation. When anticipated demand exceeds Serverless scaling pace, AWS recommends pre-scaling at least 60 minutes ahead.

Choose how the service recovers from node loss

Aiven’s non-clustered Startup plan uses one node. If that node fails, the service must restore a replacement from backup, leaving the application without service and losing writes since the backup. Business and Premium add standbys with automatic failover. (Aiven high availability)

ElastiCache’s 99.99% SLA covers Serverless and qualifying node-based Valkey deployments. The node-based commitment requires automatic failover and placement of the primary and replicas across at least two availability zones per shard.

Aiven publishes a 99.99% SLA.

Try Momento Cache

If you want client integration to stay steady through a sharding transition, consider Momento’s managed gateway and standalone-mode access.

Momento Cache puts dedicated, high-performance Valkey behind a managed gateway that keeps client integration stable as your application grows. Choose Cluster for direct control over instance types, shards, and replicas, or Flex to set capacity and replication bounds while Momento selects the topology. Both include built-in autoscaling and fully managed cluster operations.

Talk to a Momento solution engineer to evaluate the capacity model and configuration that fit your workload.

Frequently asked questions

How many connections can Aiven support?

Connection capacity grows with purchased memory. Aiven’s 4 GB example estimates 16,384 concurrent connections, with actual limits varying by plan and cloud provider.

Can an application outside AWS use ElastiCache?

Yes. ElastiCache clusters have no public IP, but applications outside AWS can connect through supported networking, including production VPN access.

What support is available for an urgent incident?

Aiven offers support response from 15 minutes. AWS offers support response from 5 minutes, and existing account coverage may apply.
